Born and raised in Hong Kong, FUNG YAT SHAN (LINUS) is one of the most active and versatile Hong Kong-based clarinettists of his generation. Linus composes, produces, performs and teaches the clarinet professionally.

Born and raised in Hong Kong, FUNG YAT SHAN (LINUS) is a Hong Kong-based clarinettist who actively gives classical, contemporary and improvisatory musical performances. Linus is a core member of the Hong Kong New Music Ensemble (HKNME), the clarinettist of Wuji Ensemble and the Freespace Ensemble, LENK Quartet, Viva Pipers and The TimeCrafters. Developing his recent passion on the exploration of electroacoustic live clarinet performance, Linus performed “Ecotone”, “KONG” (produced and presented by Freespace Ensemble), “Lychee Goklok” (commissioned and presented by HKNME) and “Snorkelling in Plastic” (supported by Hong Kong Arts Development Council) as clarinettist, concept, composer and music director.
Linus has appeared in Hong Kong Arts Festival, Hong Kong International Film Festival, Hong Kong New Vision Festival, Hong Kong Horizon Festival, Shianghai New Music Week, Seoul Computer Music Festival, Hangzhou Contemporary Music Festival, Hong Kong Noise Fest, HKT Hong Kong Pop Fest, Hong Kong Jazz Festival, Prisonyard Festival among other occasions. Multi disciplinary works including “TechBox 2023: The Travellers and The Listeners”, “HKT x WESTK POPFEST: M+ Live Cinema presents ‘Dragon’s Delusion – Paracusia’” and Olivia Yan’s “Zoetrope” have featured Linus as a solo improviser on the clarinet.
During November 2023, Linus released his debut album “KONG” and soon after co-released an EP “Miserere Mei, Deus” with renowned electronic music producer Loisey and an EP “In the Dark” with clarinettist Theresa Lam respectively during January 2024. The later EP was released as Linus’ engagement in the production “Dialogue in the Dark x Little Prince Foundation: Mini Concert in the Dark – Starry Journey” as both clarinettist and musical director which rerun in April 2024 after the January premiere. Other then his own work, he has recorded for Ann Hui’s Golden Horse nominated documentary “Elegies” musically directed by Olivier Cong, Camilo Mendez’s premiere recordings in his Kairos album “Distant Fragments” and various clarinet parts for commercial and pop productions.
A graduate of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (BA, Music) and the Royal Northern College of Music (MMus), Linus thrived under the tutorship of Martin Choy, Lynsey Marsh, John Bradbury and Nicholas Cox. During the college years, he also has the privilege to play in masterclasses by experienced clarinettists such as Reiner Wehler, Philippe Cuper, Radovan Cavallin and worked with Krzysztof Penderecki, Lorin Maazel, Sir Mark Elder in orchestral settings.
Linus has set foot as a classical clarinettist since the beginning of his career as recitalist, chamber musician and orchestral musician. In 2021 , he was invited to give recitals presented by LCSD’s “Our Music Talents” and was further invited for a joint recital with violinist Tan Ya-Bing in Shenzhen in 2024. Alongside his concerto appearances with the Medical Association Orchestra and Chung Chi Wind Orchestra, Linus has performed with the Hong Kong Sinfonietta, Hong Kong City Chamber Orchestra, Ponte Orchestra of Hong Kong, Opera Hong Kong and Musica Viva as freelance musician. In Summer 2018, Linus was invited to demonstrate in the renowned Juilliard professor Ayako Oshima’s lecture in Hong Kong. In October 2020, Linus was invited to give a lecture recital titled “Stravinsky’s Clarinet” in the University of Hong Kong with Prof. Chan Hing Yan.
Linus is a passionate clarinet tutor. Pupils of his private clarinet studio enjoy weekly lessons and annual student concerts. Many pupils are fundamental members of their school music groups and some went on to pursue a music degree on clarinet in prestigious schools including the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Linus is also a clarinet tutor of The Education University of Hong Kong and Diocesan Girls’ Junior School.
馮氏畢業於香港中文大學音樂系跟隨蔡國田主修單簧管,及後負笈英國皇家北方音樂學院攻讀碩士,師承John Bradbury, Lynsey Marsh及Nichloas Cox。在學期間曾贏得RNCM跨樂系室樂比賽、參與香港管弦樂團Share The Stage計劃、Halle管弦樂團 Professional Experience Scheme (PES) 及 BBC 管弦樂團 PES 並參與BBC 管弦樂團之演出及錄音工作。求學期間,有幸與Krzysztof Penderecki、Lorin Maazel、Sir Mark Elder等大師合作,深受啟發。
